Rep. Love: Ensuring Trade Policy Works for Utah

WASHINGTON D.C. – Congresswoman Mia Love is taking action, sparked by concern over the impact of tariffs on Utah’s economy.   She has met with two White House economic and trade advisers, and is also cosponsoring a bill that would limit the President’s authority to impose certain tariffs. (See below).

Meeting with White House Economic Advisors

On Thursday Congresswoman Love met with Director of the United States National Economic Council Larry Kudlow and White House economic advisor Peter Navarro to personally convey her concern about the Administration’s national security tariffs on automobile imports and about the escalating trade war with China.

Representative Love joined other House Republicans to address the various ways in which Americans have been harmed by both the tariffs as well as the deteriorating trade relationship with China.

Congresswoman Love also expressed frustration with the decision to offer $12 Billion to the U.S. Agriculture Industry to compensate for losses tied to the tariffs.

After the meeting, Rep. Love was quoted in THE WEEKLY STANDARD saying: “I don’t know if I’m satisfied. I guess I just don’t understand the strategy.  We don’t want to create enemies out of our allies.”

“We shouldn’t be in the practice of creating barriers and then throwing money at trying to remove those barriers.  That’s not what we do,” Rep. Love continues in THE WEEKLY STANDARD.

“Our job is to get out of the way so that people can prosper.  We want to remove barriers so that people can go and thrive and feed their families and create jobs,” Rep. Love continued.

Legislation

Rep. Love is also cosponsoring a bill to require the President to consult Congress before levying tariffs in the interest of national security, (H.R. 6337).   Congress would have 60 days to review the proposed tariffs, which could also be fast-tracked to ensure consideration. There is a similar bill in the Senate.

“Free trade is essential to Utah’s economy and leads to more economic growth, job creation, consumer choice and low prices,” Rep. Love said.  “I want to protect our state from any potentially counterproductive policy.”
